Drew,

You and I share remarkably similar stories... from the father passing, to the kids, to the height/weight -- we even look somewhat similar. I found your site from DailyBurn, and have also signed up for MapMyRun, Running Ahead, and Strands. Trying to find a site that tracks what I want it to and leaves out the stuff I don't use. I hope you'll post more updates soon, and I wouldn't mind contributing as well if you'd be interested in guest postings at some point.

About me: I'm 42, 5'7", 245 lbs. A few months ago I decided enough was enough, since I weighed 263 at the time. I was tired of wearing 44" waist slacks and shorts, tired of having to shop for clothes online or at "big and tall" stores, and just plain tired of being overweight. Since then I have lost 18 pounds mostly just by working out frequently and trying to run. I had never run before in my life, except maybe back in 8th grade during "track and field day." I got winded going up stairs. On warm days, I would break a sweat just walking from my car to a client's office. But I have a lot of colleagues at work who run, and I would see them at sales meetings, going out for their morning jogs when I was just heading down to breakfast.

It made me feel like I was missing out. And it made me wonder if I could ever run more than 10 steps in a row. So I signed up for the Running 101 class, and resolved to run/walk a 5K. My first ever. I started the Running 101 program in April, and on June 13th of this year I "ran" a 5K. I was the second-to-last person, but I finished it and felt very proud of myself. I still can't run a full mile in a row without stopping to walk, but I can tell I am in better shape already even though I have a long way to go. I've gone from being completely sedentary to feeling like I *want* to walk and run each day, either on the treadmill at the local high school or outside.

So far, I haven't been consciously watching my diet much at all. I am sure I could lose even more weight if I added some healthier eating in to my fitness regimen, but I worry about self-control. Even so, I think I am eating less because when I eat more I have a harder time running the next day.

I also have a goal to get down to 175 #. And I would like to finish a 5K in under 35 minutes, and run most if not all of it instead of walking for the majority of the route. Today I beat my best time yet for a 5K run, doing it in 45 minutes. (When I ran my 5K race back exactly a month ago, my 5K time was 51:36, so I have shaved 6+ minutes off my PR already!)

Well, that's all for now. Hope you'll drop me a line if you're looking for someone else to post on the site and I hope to read more about your successes and challenges. I hope the site is successful, and that you are as well.

Best regards,

Eric
