Introduction: My name is Drew Griffin and I am a Fat Ass!

by Drew Griffin on July 7, 2009

Hello, my name is Drew Griffin and I am a Fat Ass! Today I will begin my journey to getting leaner, healthier and rock solid! Thus the journey being Fat Ass To Fit! This site is in its infancy and we hope to grow a community of people that want to lead a healthy life style and improve themselves through exercise and proper nutrition.

A little bit about myself: I am 38 years old, married to my beautiful wife Christine and we have three beautiful little girls. Madison is 8, Erin is just about to turn 5 and Reagan will be 2 in November. I am a Wound Care Specialist by trade and work in Hyperbaric Oxygen Wound Care Center. I also have founded my own Social Media consulting company. In my younger years I played almost every sport I could including ice hockey, soccer, wrestling, golf, baseball, volleyball and several martial arts including Tae Kwon Do and Aikido.

After college, I became quite complacent and perhaps a bit depressed after the passing of my father. I eventually married and had kids and the real responsabilty started. I let myself go and…..WTF! I gained how many pounds? Who is this dude in the mirror? What the hell happened to my body? Call it what you will, I became a Fat Ass! No sugar coating it here folks. No “Oversize” or “Obese” or “Overweight” terms will be used here although the politically correct and proper medical terminology is obese or bariatric (albeit I am not classifed as bariatric). There is no room for political correctness anymore. So I am laying out there, here is my before photo. Today 7.7.09, 5′6″ 240lbs.

Drew Fat Ass

I am a FAT ASS! I am 5′6″ and 240 lbs and that my friend is pretty damn large. I carry my weight in my gut and my face and coat the rest of my muscles in a nice sheath of fat. I continue to have an athletic build but its really ridiculous at this point. Something has to be and is going to be done. My goal is 175lbs, 65 lbs to go!!!!!!

My friend Aron Po and I decided to start this site. We hope it grows to inspire others to make a change for themselves in a healthy way. Aron has already started his quest and looks like he is well on his way. I saw him at Podcamp Ohio and he looks lean and strong. So here it goes. Tonight I re-dedicate myself. I will work at improving myself daily for fitness. I know everyday won’t be perfect but consistently trying is a goal. I am going to follow the Body For Life plan and keep a journal. I will translate that to DailyBurn.com and you can follow my progress there. Look for more posts soon and feel free to comment below.

We plan to have podcasts, videos, photos, and much more soon, so check back often or subscribe for updates.

    Drew,

You and I share remarkably similar stories... from the father passing, to the kids, to the height/weight -- we even look somewhat similar. I found your site from DailyBurn, and have also signed up for MapMyRun, Running Ahead, and Strands. Trying to find a site that tracks what I want it to and leaves out the stuff I don't use. I hope you'll post more updates soon, and I wouldn't mind contributing as well if you'd be interested in guest postings at some point.

About me: I'm 42, 5'7", 245 lbs. A few months ago I decided enough was enough, since I weighed 263 at the time. I was tired of wearing 44" waist slacks and shorts, tired of having to shop for clothes online or at "big and tall" stores, and just plain tired of being overweight. Since then I have lost 18 pounds mostly just by working out frequently and trying to run. I had never run before in my life, except maybe back in 8th grade during "track and field day." I got winded going up stairs. On warm days, I would break a sweat just walking from my car to a client's office. But I have a lot of colleagues at work who run, and I would see them at sales meetings, going out for their morning jogs when I was just heading down to breakfast.

It made me feel like I was missing out. And it made me wonder if I could ever run more than 10 steps in a row. So I signed up for the Running 101 class, and resolved to run/walk a 5K. My first ever. I started the Running 101 program in April, and on June 13th of this year I "ran" a 5K. I was the second-to-last person, but I finished it and felt very proud of myself. I still can't run a full mile in a row without stopping to walk, but I can tell I am in better shape already even though I have a long way to go. I've gone from being completely sedentary to feeling like I *want* to walk and run each day, either on the treadmill at the local high school or outside.

So far, I haven't been consciously watching my diet much at all. I am sure I could lose even more weight if I added some healthier eating in to my fitness regimen, but I worry about self-control. Even so, I think I am eating less because when I eat more I have a harder time running the next day.

I also have a goal to get down to 175 #. And I would like to finish a 5K in under 35 minutes, and run most if not all of it instead of walking for the majority of the route. Today I beat my best time yet for a 5K run, doing it in 45 minutes. (When I ran my 5K race back exactly a month ago, my 5K time was 51:36, so I have shaved 6+ minutes off my PR already!)

Well, that's all for now. Hope you'll drop me a line if you're looking for someone else to post on the site and I hope to read more about your successes and challenges. I hope the site is successful, and that you are as well.

    Best regards,

    Eric
